Monday’s Resource – Common Sense Media

Jul 25, 2011 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | On-Line Educational Resources

How are you monitoring your children’s media and technology time?  Current technology and the various media outlets make monitoring our children’s media time so much more difficult. Today’s resource can help both parents and educators find safe and appropriate technological and media resources for our children.

Common Sense Media is an excellent resource that rates media based on a child’s age level. Common Sense Media gives information regarding media, so parents and educators can make informed decisions on which books, movies, websites, games, apps, music, and TV shows are age appropriate for their children and/or students.

This website has many great features, however one of my favorite aspects is the K-12 research based digital technology curriculum that is offered for FREE to educators! It is based on the work of Howard Gardner and the Good Play Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The curriculum focuses on skills building, critical thinking, ethical discussion, and decision making.

Common Sense Media is a valuable resource for parents and educators alike.
