By now you may have heard of, or even used, Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a not-for-profit company that provides a free education for anyone, anywhere. The vast amount of content can be accessed from any web-enable computer. Skills can be practiced at the student’s own pace and the library of content covers all subjects. The site allows for lessons and goals to be tracked, giving an at-a-glance perspective for both teacher and student.
In December of 2012, a California-based nonprofit organization launched KA Lite. KA Lite is an independent, open-source project created, maintained and operated by a distributed team of volunteers at the Foundation for Learning Equality, Inc. The Foundation for Learning Equality, Inc has taken into consideration the fact that 65% of the world does not have access to the internet. Knowing that all people need education, they developed KA Lite. While not officially affiliated with Khan Academy, Khan Academy is very supportive of the KA Lite project.
KA Lite can be installed on most operating systems. The student’s progress is tracked offline and their progress can be synced once they connect to the server. The program deploys Khan Academy videos and practice activities offline. The KA Lite software allows students to use the resources available on the Khan Academy website, even when they do not have access to the web.
