Summer Learning Series Week 4

Welcome to Week 4 of our summer learning series. Here are some learning activities this week that will keep your child stimulated. Are you using those summer bridge books? They are great for working on specific subject skills however give your child a break this week and work on our summer learning activities to help prevent summer learning loss. Monday: (Math & Geography) Travel Fun! Use a map and calculate where you will be if you travel 5, 10 or 50 miles from your home. Mark it on the map. Learn about those cities or towns. Use the internet and do some research. Tuesday: (Art & Writing) Summer Artist: Grab a bucket, water and a few paint brushes. Go outside and write your sight or vocabulary words on the sidewalk. If you would rather see the words in color, grab some sidewalk chalk and write them along your driveway. Wednesday: (Writing) Calling All Writers!: Write your own play today. You can work with a friend on this activity. Work together by creating your very own play. Focus on having a few characters. What is the setting of your play? Summer Learning Series Week #3

I can’t believe we are in week 3 of our summer learning series. This summer is a hot one so far! Cool off inside with our summer learning activies. Week 3 Monday:  (Writing)  Think about your favorite toy. Write about your favorite toy. Why is it your favorite toy? Where did you get it from? Why is this toy so special to you? Tuesday: (Writing and Art) Come up with 15-20 adjectives that describe you. Make a poster of you and include your adjectives. Wednesday: (Math) Create a new board game. Include math facts into your game. Play this game with 3 different people. Ask them to give you feedback on your new math game. Was it challenging? Was the game fun to play? Would you recommend my game to a friend? Thursday: (Writing) Create a recipe book. Fill your book with your favorite recipes. Include pictures of some of the food creations you make this summer. Be sure to do this activity with an adult! Friday: (Reading and Writing) Write a book review of a book that you have read this summer. How many stars would you give your book? Explain your rating. Summer Learning Series Week 2

Welcome back to our Summer Learning Series! How did week 1 go for you? Here are some more activities for week 2! Week 2: Monday: (Art) Draw a picture of the sunrise or sunset. Try to use different art materials. Be creative and have fun with it! Tuesday: (Writing) What is your biggest problem today. Describe your horrible, no good, very bad day. Wednesday: (Writing) Watch your favorite television show. Write a critique about the show. What did you like best about it? What did you not enjoy? What would you change about the show? Thursday: (Reading) Read an extra twenty minutes today. Share what you read with someone. Friday (Math): Grab a friend a play some fun math games. Spend 30 minutes on playing these games. Summer Learning Series Week 1

Welcome to our weekly summer learning series! You will find learning activities that range in subjects such as writing, reading, math, social studies and science. You can choose to do all the activities or pick your favorite.  The goal is to keep your child engaged in learning which will prevent summer learning loss! Stay tuned for the our weekly summer learning series every Monday during the summer months! Week 1: Monday: (Writing)  Describe what you think are the “lazy, hazy, crazy” days of summer. Tuesday:  (Writing)  Create a new version of the Star Spangled Banner. Share your version with a family member. Wednesday: (Reading, Social Studies) Why do we celebrate July 4th? Do some research and share  your information with a friend. Thursday: (Math) Go out with your parents to a restaurant. Once the order is placed look at the menu and estimate the total cost of the bill. Compare your estimate with the actual cost. Friday: ( Writing and Science) Write a weather forecast report for today as if you were a newscaster. Report the weather to your family and friends. What is on your Summer Bucket List?

Another school year has come and gone! It is now the beginning of summer which includes longer days with your children and many hours to fill with activities. Are you feeling the stress of having to fill the days with activities? Set summer goals or set a summer bucket list with your kids. This is a great way to teach your children goal setting skills. Talk with your children about setting some realistic goals that they will need to work toward this summer. Here are some great ideas that may prompt the thinking process in your home. Read 10 books this summer. Learn a new language. Learn to ride a bike. Improve their freestyle swim stroke. Learn a song on the guitar.   The goal with a summer bucket list is to push yourself out of your comfort zone while learning something new.  Here are a few tips on setting your goals for your summer bucket list: Set ONLY a few goals. Summer Learning Fun

Enrich your child’s summer with fun activities that will help prevent summer learning loss.  Here are some educational activities your child can do that balance learning with fun. Become a Junior Volunteer: Volunteering for a nonprofit organization is a way for your child to contribute to the community in which they live. Locate a nonprofit in your area that advocates for a social cause your child is interested in and find out if they have a Junior Volunteer Program. Helping others can be a rewarding experience and can teach your child character building skills. Visit United We Serve to locate a nonprofit that matches your child’s interests. Start a book club: The popularity of books written for children have grown over the past few years. What is your child’s favorite book? Do their friends read the same book? If so, help your child start a book club with their peers. It will give your child a chance to enhance their overall reading skills while they socialize. Join a summer program at the local library: Some libraries offer free reading and science programs for children. Summer Activity- Calling All Writers!

Inspire your child to write a book! Kids will have lots of fun as they explore and share facts from their own lives. Children of all ages can take part in this activity. The activity begins with children gathering information about their lives through photos. Here are some ideas for photos that can inspire the writing process: Your child doing something (playing soccer, swimming etc..) Photos of places they have visited  Photos of your child’s favorite people Photos of your child’s special things or events  Have your child brainstorm ideas for their book.  Here are some ideas to think about: Jot down important dates relevant to their lives (birthdays, graduations etc..) What is their favorite sport? What is their favorite pastime?  Who is their role model and why? What accomplishment are they most proud of?  When your child has put together their ideas and photos you will want them to make a draft of their autobiography. How do I Select the Best Summer Camp for My Child?

This is the time to shop for the best summer camp for your child. You want to find a summer camp that gives your child an engaging, happy and safe summer experience. Interviewing the summer camps’ director is the place to begin with this process. It is important to know how the long the camp has been operating. If the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association you can bet that the day camp has been approved by the non-profit’s 300 standards health, safety, programs, staffing and facilities. This accreditation is just the beginning of the interview process. Here are some questions that can guide you on this journey.  What is the camp’s mission or philosophy? Only you, the parent, can determine if the overall mission is a good fit for your child. If the camp is a sports camp does it offer a balance of skills and drills, techniques and practice time?
