The Bone Series

My oldest son got the first two books in Jeff Smith’s Bone series for his 9th birthday. He finished both books in about two days. That was February. And for the past four months, I’ve been meaning to find the time to read them myself so I could chat with him about them, rather than just ask him questions and assume the answers he gave me were right. Okay, I haven’t been actively looking for the time, it’s more like the books have been sitting on my bedside table waiting for me to dust them off, open them up and read them.

It’s now June , I’ve been assigned my first blog at work and I need to find a topic. What better time to read comic books! Wait…that’s not procrastinating, that’s job-related research, right? Yes. I’ve found my first topic! I do feel a bit of competition, though. I knew I had to chisel out enough time to finish them in two days or less, just like my dear son. That’s just a joke, of course. I plan on finishing them in ONE day! Ha!

All kidding aside, I read both books and am quite impressed with the characters, story line and illustrations. So impressed, in fact, that I’ve added the next few books in the series to my amazon.com shopping cart. I think my son will like the surprise when the delivery arrives. Who doesn’t like to open packages, right!?

Bone is a story of three misfit cousins who get run out of their hometown, find themselves lost and separated, but eventually get reunited. Jeff Smith came up with the idea when he was nine years old. The last page of each book gives information about Jeff Smith and the inception of Bone. Smith launched the Bone series in 1991, as underground comic books.

If your child likes books like Captain Underpants and Magic Pickle, then you might consider adding the Bone series to your summer reading list. And if your reader is into online games, then check out the Bone games.

Thanks for taking the time to read my first blog. This summer, between hiking the trails, looking for crayfish, writing blogs and riding bikes, I’m going to find the time to finish Jeff Smith’s Bone series. Want to join me?

Have you read a comic book series that you think young readers would like to read? Are you part of the Underground Comic Book Club? If so, let me know, I need to do research for my next blog. (Wink. Wink.)
