Summer vacation is just a few weeks away! As the school year winds down and the summer planning begins be sure to incorporate summer learning into your schedule. A summer without an academic component can lead to a significant learning loss. Prevent summer learning loss by incorporating some of these activities.

1. Daily Reading Time:

Incorporate daily reading each day this summer. All it takes is about 30 minutes of daily reading to strengthen your reading skills. Keep track of your daily reading by using a family calendar or a reading log. If your child is a struggling reader, work closely with your child during reading time or consider working with a reading tutor.

2. Strengthen Math Skills:

Daily math practice is an excellent way to keep your child from falling behind in math. There are many great websites that can help your child make daily math practice fun and simple. Incorporate one of these FREE websites into your summer math plan: Khan Academy or MathABC.com.

3. Discover Your Creative Writing Skills:

Creative writing is an excellent way to improve your writing skills, enhance your critical thinking and foster your creativity and imagination. In today’s curriculum writing is vitally important. A great way to enhance your child’s writing skills over the summer is to create a journal or summer blog. Your child will not only enjoy the process but may blossom into a wonderful writer!

4. Enhance Your Reading Strategies:

Summertime is an excellent time for students to sharpen their active reading strategies. Reading is not just about reading words. Being an active reader refers to visualization, making notes, asking questions before, during and after reading and more. Is your child actively reading? Incorporate active reading strategies into your child’s reading this summer to create a stronger reader!
