May 12, 2017 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Reading, Summer Slide Prevention

Summer time is a wonderful time to foster the love of reading & writing with your child. Here are some simple ways to incorporate literacy activities during your days. Choose the activities that most fits your child’s learning style. Make the learning fun this summer while instilling the love of reading and writing!

Summer Literacy Activities:

1. Draw a picture of your favorite page in your book. Write why this page is your favorite.

2. Draw a map or a scene of the book’s setting.

3. Create a sketch or drawing of the main character in your story. Write a few lines about your character’s personality. Do you like the main character? Explain why or why not.

4. Use a shoe box and create a diorama of the story’s setting. Include the characters, animals and buildings in your diorama. Write or discuss an explanation of your diorama.

5. Draw a comic strip of your favorite book this summer. Include captions into your comic strip.

6. Write a blog about your favorite story this summer. Share your blog with your friends and family.

7. Research some current events on Tweentribune.  Read and share your favorite details of the news.

8. Your middle school or high schooler should read high level fiction or non-fiction books. Create a book club with a group of kids. Create questions and theme gatherings to have interactive and engaging book discussions.

9. Read about a topic of interest! Does your child love Disney? Then read books about DisneyWorld. Find topics of interest and connect it to reading. Make sure the material you find is on your child’s reading level. If it’s too difficult, she may get discouraged.

10. Plan a day trip together. Allow your child to help plan a fun trip this summer. Have them research the location and activities. This will bring a different level of excitement and will bring a joy to reading.

Encouraging your child to read this summer is a great way to reduce summer learning loss. Creating unique ways to promote literacy will help foster a long-time reader. How will you promote literacy this summer?
