How do I Keep My Child Motivated to Do Homework?

Spring is almost here, the days are getting longer and your child has “checked out of school ”, how do you keep them motivated and focused during homework time ? There are still 3 full months of school remaining so this is no time to lose focus and stamina.

Here are some tips to keep your child invested and motivated when doing homework.

Change the scenery: If your child usually does homework on the kitchen table, switch it up. Have them do homework on the dining room table or in your home office. This change of scenery may seem simple but it can give them the boost they need to stay focused.

Breaks, Breaks, Breaks: Homework may be getting more difficult now because the concepts may be progressively harder and your child is a bit more fatigued. It is important to give your child a few breaks. Set the timer and discuss a goal. Have your child complete 30 minutes of focused work and then give them a 5 minute break. You don’t want to give them a very long break because it may be difficult to get them refocused on their homework again.

Change the schedule: Your child may come home from school and start their homework right away. Perhaps just adjusting their schedule may be all that they need. Instead of doing homework as soon as they get home try giving them a snack and allow them to have some down time after school. This change gives them the energy they need to have the focus and renewed energy for homework.

Remember even adults “check out” or lose focus from time to time in our daily lives so be patient with your child. These simple tips may give them the change they need to hang in there in the final stretch! Do you have any ideas to share with our readers?
