In honor of Math Education Month, we wanted to share with you some ways to support math learning at home while improving your child’s math skills.
Master The Skill: In today’s math classes, lessons are moving at a very fast pace. Often times skills are taught even when your child hasn’t fully mastered the previous skill. Take the time at home to give your child additional practice on skills that they are finding difficult. The additional one-on-one support will give him the practice he needs to master the skill. Allow your child to move at his pace at home. This will give him the confidence he needs to move with the rest of the class.
Fluency Practice: Your child needs to be fluent in his basic math fact skills. Give him daily practice so he can fluently (accurately and with speed) answer the math facts. This additional practice can be as little as 10 minutes a day. This practice will give him the tools that he needs to be successful in math.
Make Math Connections: Incorporate math learning in your everyday life. Here are some ways to promote math practice daily: allow your child to measure ingredients while cooking or ask your child to add all items on the receipt to double check the total. Find ways to continue reinforcing math learning every day!
There are many opportunities to explore math at home. Giving your child ample time to discover math at home will help build your child’s self-confidence and give your child a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
