Are you creating a summer that is “summer slide” proof? Today’s blog is focusing on ONE way to prevent summer slide. This idea involves parental support and I think this is well WORTH it!

Start a parent and child book club! This is a wonderful way to bond with your child as well as support their summer learning. How do you select the books? You can use your child’s summer required reading list to select books or you can select books based on interest. Have your child list all the topics they find interesting. Choose books based on interest, by selecting their favorite author or select a specific story/theme. Make sure to take turns on who selects the books.

Take the time to read together, read separately, or do a little of both. If you have a hectic schedule incorporate the Audible app, this is a great way to keep up with your reading.

Make certain that there is discussion throughout the process. Select stopping points such as specific chapters and discuss the story. Discuss your favorite part, the conflict or problem in the story, discuss the character’s personalities, the theme, and the setting. There are no limits or requirements to these book discussions. Just be sure to talk and have fun during this learning task.

Don’t make this reading club a chore, make it a pleasurable experience and enjoy the process. Grab that book and cuddle close with your child while reading. Escape into that story and enjoy the adventure. The special bonds you will create will be well worth the read.

I hope you find the parent and child book club a worthwhile adventure this summer. I will be personally enjoying books with my rising 3rd grader and rising 7th graders! I have to admit I will be uploading these books into my Audible app so I am able to keep up with all of MY reading requirements!

Do you think a parent book club is something you will incorporate into your summer plans?
