Does Your Child LOVE TO READ?

Jul 30, 2015 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Reading

I love to read. Do you love reading? Not everyone can say, “I love to read!” Reading skills are very important for building creativity, interest in learning and to explore other worlds. Here are some ways to help your child get into reading and hopefully getting them to say and truly mean, “I love to read!”

1. Be sure that your child sees you reading often. It can be a book, Kindle, newspaper or magazine. Create an environment that promotes reading for joy and pleasure.

2. Create a comfortable reading location in your home, a place where anyone would want to curl up with a book for hours.

3. Promote conversation before, during and after reading a book. This discussion promotes understanding and ignites the imagination.

4. Foster rereading of their favorite book or author. Also, encourage them to get other books written by their favorite author.

5. Introduce graphic novels to your child. These types of books are filled with exciting illustrations and dialogue which is super fun for reluctant readers.

6. Expose your child to a variety of non-fiction books. This is a great way to bridge other subjects into your child’s world.
