5 Ways to Help Your Child Get Organized

Believe it or not, even the most disorganized child can develop good organizational skills. Here are a few strategies that can help.

1. Stick to a schedule
Establish a routine. Regular mealtimes and bedtimes are important as they will help your child fall into a pattern at home. Limit screen time to specific times during the day/evening.

2. Keep a to-do list
Use checklists to track homework assignments and due dates. Each time your child completes as assignment, cross it off to give her a sense of accomplishment.

3. Organize assignments and paperwork
Develop a system to keep track of important papers. A binder and a few folders will suffice. This will help when reviewing material for upcoming classes and preparing for tests and quizzes. Use different folders to organize handouts, papers to be signed by parents, etc. What’s most important is to find a system that works and stick with it.

4. Designate a study space
Find a quiet place to study where your child can concentrate exclusively on her homework. Turn off the TV, radio, phone, etc. These things are too distracting. All necessary school supplies should be on hand.

5. Plan Ahead
Have you child pack-up her school bag before she goes to bed. Lay out her clothes (shoes, socks, etc.) for the next day and make sure all necessary outerwear (coats, hats, gloves, etc.) is easily accessible. This will save on time and allow your child to prepare quickly for the day ahead.
