Once registered to take the Digital SAT, the next step is to prepare to take the test. A major change is the SAT is now digital. How does that affect those who are taking the test?
This change to digital has its benefits. Here are some frequently asked questions about the digital format:
Q. How long is the digital SAT?
A. The test is shorter-only 2 hours and 14 minutes, compared to 3 hours.
Q. How many sections are there?
A. There are 2 modules of reading & writing and 2 modules of math.
Q. Are we allowed to use calculators in the math section?
A. Yes-you can use a calculator in all sections of the math exam.
Q. Are all the questions the same level of difficulty in each module?
A. The exam is adaptive so your score on the first module will determine whether you take an easy or hard section for the second module.
Q. Are there still long passages in the reading content?
A. There are no more lengthy, multiple-page passages in the reading section-it now contains shorter paragraphs with only 1 or 2 questions per passage.
Q. Should I guess if I don’t know the answer?
A. During a computer adaptive test, taking an educated guess will help more than not answering a question at all. There is no penalty for incorrect answers.

TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES
Understanding how to take the SAT test is just as important as your subject area knowledge. With that in mind, in preparation for taking the SAT, students are encouraged to understand test-taking strategies:
- Pacing-be mindful of the amount of time you take to answer the questions
- Process of Elimination-When unsure about the answer, it is a good practice to eliminate the answers you know are incorrect first.
- In the reading and writing sections, it is helpful to scan the questions before reading the passages, so you know what to look for when reading.
- For the reading and writing portion, it is helpful to review common SAT words.
- For math, review common equations and applications
