Tips for Essay Writing for Test Prep

Aug 7, 2012 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | ACT, SAT Prep, Test Prep

To most, writing is not their forte, therefore the mere thought of writing an essay on a standardized test is nerve racking!  Reality is, however, if you remember a few tips, you will be able to tackle the essay and earn the score of your goal!

 Tips for Writing the Essay:

Use multiple examples:

Personal examples are the most commonly type of examples used when responding to a writing prompt.  While it is OK to use a personal example, limit the number of personal examples provided to 1!  The reader does not know you personally, therefore by providing more than one personal example does not prove that you fully understand the writing prompt.

Use literary, science, historical, entertainment, sports, technological, artistic, or other references as examples when supporting your thesis.  The more variety, the better the essay.  If you are feeling adventurous, choose three: one from three different categories; such as one personal example, one literary, and one historical!

Use your examples within your thesis:

By providing the examples within the thesis statement, you allow your reader some insight into where you would like to take them throughout your essay.  It is not only polite, but leads to a more structured essay.  Whatever you do, do not leave the thesis out of your essay!

Conclusion does NOT equal repeat!

Yes, when you write a conclusion you are restating your idea or theory.  However, it is important to NOT take previous sentences within your essay and rewrite them to compose a concluding paragraph.  There is always another way to say (or write) a statement or idea.  Use alternate words to make the same point and really hit home the theme of your essay.
