Now that the school year is in full swing, students will be tasked with a variety of test-taking to measure their skill levels and knowledge in all subject areas. Whether it is a weekly quiz, a mid-term exam, or a standardized test; such as the PSAT, ACT or SAT, we have tips and suggestions to help students feel confident and be successful!
Here are some suggestions as students prepare for test day:
Test Preparation Strategies:
- Build good study habits
- Reread and review class materials and previous assignments.
- Establish a dedicated study space. Find a quiet place to study with minimal distractions.
- Create a study plan: Schedule when and what you’ll study.
- Use a planner or calendar to stay on track of upcoming quizzes and tests.
- Set goals: Make a list of study goals and check them off when completed.
- Take breaks: Pause between study sessions, to exercise or have a snack.
- Avoid procrastinating and studying last minute, like the night before the test.
- Ensure that you understand the material thoroughly-as you review class materials, ask questions and gain clarification from your teacher, a tutor, a family member or classmate.
- Gather all materials for the test the night before.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Have a healthy breakfast.
- Develop positive rituals incorporating a calm, confident and focused approach; such as breathing exercises, light stretching, and focusing on a positive mindset.
Here are some best practices to keep in mind and incorporate when taking a test:
Test-Taking Strategies:
- Carefully listen if test directions are provided orally. If working independently, read through the directions once, then again to ensure understanding. Ask questions to clarify, as needed.
- Briefly scan the entire assessment so that you know the types of questions and how many there are to answer.
- Respond to the questions that you can confidently answer first-this will allow more time for you to think about your answers to more challenging questions.
- Check to make sure you answered everything.
- Be sure to check (and double check) all your answers to ensure you didn’t skip any questions.
