Learning How to Learn: Study Techniques That Work

Learning How to Learn: Study Techniques That Work

How does a student learn to learn? Many factors influence a student’s ability to understand, engage, and remember what they are learning in school. A student’s inability to comprehend and remember information can affect their learning process and performance. In a classroom setting, there may be distractions. Some students need more time to reflect on their learning and what was presented in class. That is why it is so important for students to develop ways to review and process their lessons outside of the classroom setting.

Homework and study time support, reinforce, and enhance their learning process. Students retain information at their own pace, using methods that work for them. Some students struggle to process and remember information, especially if they experience test anxiety or study exhaustion.

The experts at Team Tutor offer a few ways to minimize stress and anxiety when preparing for tests:

Here are some suggestions for ways a student can improve their lesson retention and study experiences:

  • Create a dedicated study space
  • Set goals and organize your time
  • Take breaks regularly
  • Minimize distractions

With a wide variety of study methods, each student needs to find what works best for them. They should try a few techniques and select the process that helps them remember and understand information. Here is a list of methods for your student to try:

  • Mnemonics-Memory aids that help individuals remember information by developing creative association methods like imagery, acronyms, rhymes, and songs. The main idea of this technique is to make learning more engaging and interactive. Some forms of mnemonics include visuals, alliteration, keyword identification, use of acronyms, rhyme, music, and connection.
  • Pomodoro Technique-A time management method designed for greater productivity. A student will set a timer to study for 25 minutes, then take a 5- minute break. This study method reduces distractions. When you set the timer, you dedicate that time to focusing on your study.
  • Visualization-The process of associating difficult concepts with familiar objects or words.
  • Summarizing-Breaking down a concept or lesson and explaining it in your own words, as if you were teaching it to someone else.
  • Spaced repetition-Practicing materials for just 30 minutes a day. Use flashcards, organize them into boxes, and review them consistently.
  • SQ3R method-Survey, question, read, recite, and review. This method promotes active reading of the material. By asking questions, summarizing key points, and reviewing your understanding, you are more likely to retain information.
  • Mind maps-organizing your thoughts and ideas by creating a visual map of how different ideas relate to each other. With this method, you can see the big picture and make connections between different pieces of information.

Using any of these techniques will make study sessions more effective and successful. Each method has its unique advantages and can help improve academic performance. What works for one person might not work for another. Through trial and error, your student can find the method(s) they are most comfortable using and will provide the best results.
