It’s Science Fair Time!

Apr 6, 2011 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Science

Springtime is finally here! Many schools kick off the spring season with their annual Science Fair. I really enjoy this activity, as I find it’s a wonderful way to explore various science themes and plan some cool experiments. Let me share with you a little bit about what the girls and I worked on this year!

The science fair is optional for the younger students at my children’s school. I opt to do it with them and we make it a family affair – even my husband and 2-year old get involved! We have so much fun doing these projects together!

This year we decided to do an experiment called “Dancing Raisins”. The goal was to see what happened to raisins when you put them in water, soda and soda water. We all made predictions on what would happen and jotted down our observations. The girls had a blast!  I think it’s fair to say their favorite part was when I opened the soda water and it exploded all over me – not part of the project. As you can imagine, the girls could hardly contain themselves!

This was a very simple project (remember my twins are in 1st grade), but still a great exercise that really piqued their interest in science.  Next year my kids have their eyes set on “volcanic eruptions”! I, on the other hand, am not so thrilled about that one!

Sounds like fun! Yes, I remember the days of the Science Fairs. My genius child always had to do something very complicated. Why couldn’t she be like other kids? It has paid off and she is entering the International Baccaluate (I am sure I spelled that wrong!) next year as a Junior in high school! Where have the years gone?
