This is the time of year when many parents start to ponder this very question. Even if your child turns five prior to your state’s cut-off date, you may be still be wondering if they are ready. Kindergarten is much more rigorous than it was when I was in school. In fact, numerous school districts have implemented ambitious and challenging curriculums that many educators agree are better suited for first grade.
When determining whether your little one is ready, take a look at them as a “whole child”. Evaluate them socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually when determining whether they are ready for kindergarten. While many parents tend to hold off when they feel that their child isn’t quite ready in order to give them another year in preschool, others enroll their children in enrichment programs prior to the start of kindergarten to give them a “boost” academically. Neither of these approaches is wrong. You have to do what you feel is best for your child.
If you are not sure if your little one is ready, talk to your child’s preschool teacher. If the teacher is on the fence and your child is a younger five-year old, it’s never a bad idea to keep them in preschool an additional year. Trust your instincts – you know your child best!
