Home Organizational Systems for School Success

Aug 5, 2013 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Back To School, Organization

It is early August and back to school time is almost upon us. This is the time to ponder about the things that made last year successful and those that did not work.  August is a time to set goals for this coming school year. What is going to promote success in your home?  Create a successful school year with organizational systems.  Organization is essential to school success. In order for an organizational system to be effective the entire family needs to be involved.  Follow these tips to learn how you can create a successful plan for this school year.

Calendar:

Place a family calendar with everyone’s schedules in a place that is visible to all. Color code everyone’s activities and assignments. Make sure to update the calendar weekly.

Mailbox:

Set up a school and home mailbox. Label each mailbox so your children can identify where the school information belongs. Check this mail on a daily basis. Be sure to throw  junk mail. You will want to minimize as much clutter as possible.

 Store Supplies:

Keep all the school supplies in one area. This will be the go to place for all your children during homework time. On a weekly basis check the supplies and restock any items that are running low.

 Visual Board:

Create a visual board of your child’s art work, tests or projects. Showcase their work and change out the materials on a weekly basis. This visual board is a great way to show how proud you are of your child’s accomplishment.

Storage:

Where does your child place their book bags, shoes, jackets and lunch boxes? Set up a zone in your home that your children know where their school items belong. This will be the area where your child will put all their items. It will minimize a mess in other areas of your home. Keeping the items in one area will also minimize the chance for your child to lose things. Setting up organizational systems reduces stress, fosters independence and creates the foundation for success. Set up these organizational systems prior to the start of school year. Start practicing now to see if these systems will work for your family. If they do not change it up and keep working until it works for your and your family. Focus on establishing these organizational systems so your child can feel a sense of order which helps reduce stress.
