It is August and back to school time is almost upon us. This is a great time to reassess your home organizational strategies. What was successful last year and what wasn’t? Setting goals is key to school success. Here are 4 tips to helping you have a successful organizational system at home!
Use a Family Calendar:
Do you have a family calendar? You should! Having a family calendar is a great way to for all members of the family to know what is coming up during the week. Place the family calendar in a place that is visible to all. Use a variety of colored pens and color code everyone’s weekly activities and assignments. Always be sure to update the calendar when changes arise.
Create a Home/School Mailbox:
Establish a school and home mailbox station in an area that is available to all. Ask your children to put all school papers in the mailbox. Check this mail on a daily basis. Be sure to throw junk mail. You will want to minimize as much clutter as possible. Creating a mailbox system will promote communication and organization.
Establish a Display Board:
Create a visual display board of your child’s art work, tests or projects. This visual board is a great way to show how proud you are of your child’s accomplishment. It is also a great way to post reminders of important events.
Create Storage Solutions:
Do you have a designated spot for your children’s book bags, shoes, and jackets? Create an area in your home that your children know where their school items belong. This will be the area where your child will place all of their items. It will minimize a mess in other areas of your home. This will also decrease the chances of items getting lost, that in itself is a time savor!
Establishing organizational systems minimizes stress, fosters independence and creates the foundation for academic success. Set these organizational systems prior to the start of school year. Put them into action to see if these systems will work for your family. If they do not work, change it up and keep working until it works for you and your family.
