Choosing Your Prompt for the Common Application Essay

Choosing the Common App essay prompt that aligns with your personal story can be overwhelming. Rather than selecting the right prompt, let your story guide your prompt selection. Admissions experts often suggest writing the story you want to tell first, then “reverse-engineering” it to fit a prompt. By focusing on your story first, you can select the prompt that best highlights your personal growth, background, or core values.

  • Start by brainstorming your most meaningful stories, values, and experiences. Once you have a storyline that showcases your personality and growth, you can determine which of the seven prompts is the best fit.  Most personal stories can be adapted to fit at least one (often multiple) of the prompt options.
  • In developing your personal story, think about what aspect of yourself you want to share with colleges. Have you faced a significant challenge? Learned an important lesson? Had a meaningful personal experience that shaped your perspective? Once you know the story you want to tell, choosing a prompt becomes much easier.
  • One note: if none of the provided prompts feels right, the Common App’s “open topic” option in the 2024-25 cycle allows students to write about anything that matters to them. Their essay does not have to fit neatly into one of the other categories because this option is available to them.
  • Map your story idea to a prompt. Each prompt is flexible enough to allow students to write about a variety of experiences.
  • Here are some suggestions on how to align your essay with the prompt:
    • Prompt 1-Background/Identity: Essay about who you are or a special interest or talent.
    • Prompt 2-Obstacles: Sharing a time when you faced a challenge or setback, and explain the impact and what you learned from the experience.
    • Prompt 3-Question or Challenge a Belief or Idea: Expressing a time you stood up for something or changed your mind about a major issue. What was the result?
    • Prompt 4-Gratitude-Sharing something that elicited your thankfulness or gratitude and explain how it changed or motivated you.
    • Prompt 5-Personal Growth: Describe an accomplishment or realization that resulted in a new understanding.
    • Prompt 6-Engaging Topic: Showcase a topic or concept that is so engaging that you immerse yourself.
    • Prompt 7-Topic of Your Choice: If your story is powerful, but doesn’t quite fit any of the prompts-you can use this for your essay.

Sharing a personal story that has meaning and value to who you are is the goal.

Focus on the idea that the prompt is a starting point, not a limitation. The prompts can generate thoughts and ideas. The best essays come from genuine, personal reflection, not from trying to fit into a specific theme.
