“I Can’t Do My Homework!”

“I can’t do my homework!” Have you ever heard your child say these words? Are breakdowns or crying fits part of your child’s daily practice when doing homework?

These times are very difficult for a parent to witness and just utterly frustrating for a child who is experiencing such a challenging time. How can you help your child when they have reached their frustration level and just want to give up? Here are some strategies that can help you get through these difficult times.

Take a Break: 

When your child has reached his breaking point. Give them a break!  Even just a few minutes outside or even listening to music can really help your child. These little mental breaks can give them a sense of relief and calm. This reprieve from homework can be enough to get them back on track.

Talk With Your Child:

Ask your child what is frustrating them. There feelings are very important. Understanding what is bothering them can give insight on how to handle their frustrations.

Know The Signs:

Try to be aware when these breakdowns occur. Understand what the triggers are so you can help prevent them. Does your child get overwhelmed when seeing all of the tasks that are needed to completed? Do they get overwhelmed when there is too much noise when doing homework? Do they get fatigued and frustrated when they work more than 30 minutes at a time. Understanding the why is often a good way to help prevent future meltdowns.

There are many reasons why kids have meltdowns during homework time. It is important that parents are in-tuned to their child’s emotions and reasons for them. Communicate with your child so you can understand what is going on. Parents that are engaged and involved in their child’s school life will have more successful outcomes.
