What is the ACT Test?

Mar 26, 2013 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | ACT, Test Prep

Believe it or not, not everyone is familiar with the ACT test. I was recently speaking with a few parents of middle school students and they were not aware of the alternative college entrance exam to the SAT. I thought a simple explanation of the ACT would be helpful for many parents who are not aware of the ACT exam.

The ACT test measures achievement related to high school curricula. The questions asked on the ACT are directly related to what you are learning in school. This exam consists of 5 long sections called “tests”. They consist of English, Mathematics, Reading, Science & Writing (optional essay). The total testing time for the ACT is 3 hours and 25 minutes (with essay). It is NOT an IQ nor aptitude test. The ACT is accepted in all 4-year colleges and universities in the United States.

The daily work that you do in school is preparing you for the ACT. Taking honors or AP courses will also help you with the ACT. Taking test prep courses will give you an advantage with the ACT test. The more practice ACT tests you take will also benefit your performance.

Did your child take the ACT? What did they think of this test?
