Minimize Stress With Our Study Tips

Oct 26, 2018 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Study Skills, Study Tips, Testing

As an elementary and high school student, I vividly remember disliking tests. I remember feeling anxious and sometimes sick to my stomach leading up to the test. As I work with students many of them describe “feeling nervous or feeling irritable” when they have to take a test.

There are many ways that we can help our students minimize the stress and anxiety that often is associated with test taking. Here are some test-taking strategies that will empower your student, minimize stress and give them the clarity to do well on their tests.

Prepare for a Test With Our Plan

A Week (Or Longer) Prior:

  • Always plan out your study time. If you can, begin studying well in advance. Two weeks is optimal, however, one week can give you enough time to properly plan for your test.
  • Study a little every day leading up to the test. Break up the material in chunks.
  • Rewrite your notes. Read them aloud and try to memorize as much information as you can.
  • Partner up with a study partner. Partner work is a very effective way to study. Remember to stay focused when working with a partner.
  • Use Quizlet. This a great online resource for studying!

Day Before The Test:

  • Get plenty of rest the night before the test.
  • Eat healthy food so you have the energy to stay focused while taking the test.
  • Review your material before you go to bed. Studies have shown that studying before you go to bed leads to greater retention of the material.

The Day of The Test:

  • Read the questions thoroughly. Re-read any questions if necessary.
  • If the test is a multiple choice format, read all the choices before choosing your answer.
  • Always take an educated guess and select your answer. Implement the process of elimination.
  • Do the easiest problem first. This will boost your confidence and give you some momentum on the test.
  • If you don’t know an answer, skip it. Go on with the rest of the test and go back to it later. There may be something on another part of the test that can help you out with the question.
  • Check over your test after you are done.
  • Maintain a positive attitude throughout the test and repeat these words: “I can do this!”

Test taking is different for every student, so it’s important to continue to develop your study skills and learn what works best for you! If you need some help getting started, don’t hesitate to work with a tutor to develop your study skills.
