The Power of a Camera

Ok, so do any of you have a child who struggles with reading or isn’t into reading at all? Well, do I have an idea that may work for you!  One of my girls struggles a bit with reading. She enjoys listening to stories and at times she likes to read aloud to me, but when we give her a story on her reading level or a bit above of her level, she frustrates easily. Now, knowing that she loves attention and has even asked a few times to be “put in a commercial”, I knew I had an idea that she would just love!

I gave her a book that was well within her independent reading level, but one that would also challenge her a bit, and told her to practice for few days by reading it to me, her dad, her sisters, her stuffed animals, etc. I also told her that when she felt comfortable we would video tape her reading and share it with our family. Well was she on board! In fact she practiced, practiced, practiced and within 2 days – that’s right just two days – she excitedly said, “Mom I’m ready to be on TV!” What great words to hear!

She picked the perfect spot in our home and we started recording.  It was amazing to see my little girl all lit-up. She was just so comfortable and natural in front of the camera (that is for a different blog!). For once she was extremely confident while reading; she didn’t fidget, give up, or get distracted by the tiniest object. I was such a proud mommy and the teacher in me saw her student find their own. It was amazing!

For you parents out there who face these same challenges, try connecting your child’s reading with their passions and interests.  Be patient with your child’s progress. It will happen and when it does enjoy it, savor the moment and record it if you can!  My little girl is not yet where she needs to be in term of reading, but oh boy is she getting there, and I am so happy to be a part of her journey!
