Running + Education = Empowerment

May 17, 2011 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Running

Today’s academic resource is not one of my typical educational suggestions or products, but a great program that combines two of my passions – education and running!  Anyone who knows me knows how committed I am to both endeavors.

Today’s recommendation – Girls on the Run – perfectly blends the two. Their mission says it all – “To educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living”. I strongly recommend that parents of young girls check out this amazing program!

The Girls on the Run program trains girls in grades 3-5 for a 5K (3.1 mile) race. The 12 week program includes a training regimen, as well as a curriculum that focuses on girl’s development physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. There is also a track program for girls in 6th through 8th grades – Girls on Track. What an amazing concept – empowering young girls both physically and emotionally!

This past weekend a large group of girls right here in Montgomery County, two of whom (see photo) my girls and I know personally, ran their first 5K! I can’t wait until my girls are in 3rd grade! We will be taking part in this program for sure! Way to go Allie, Lia and the rest of the girls who ran the race – you rock!

Check out this amazing program at www.girlsontherun.org  Have you or someone you know taken part in this program? I’d love to hear your story! Run Girls Run!!
