5 Tips for Effective Project Planning

Mar 4, 2020 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Homework, Organization, Study Skills

Project planning can be a challenge for many students. Often times students are given projects with due dates a few weeks in advance and the projects sit in the folder until a few days before it is due. Procrastination often occurs because a student just doesn’t know “how” to start a big project. Nonetheless, procrastination produces stress for both the student and the parent. We want to help minimize stress and empower students with strategies that will foster effective time management skills, independence and creativity.

Post the Due Date:

As soon you know the due date, post it on your calendar. Whether you use a digital or paper calendar, post it on a calendar so you can view it daily. If you are using a digital calendar such as google or ical, you will want to set “reminders for this project” and if you are using a paper calendar post it on your calendar and highlight it so it grabs your attention!

Read and Understand the Directions:

Read the directions as soon as it is assigned. Do not avoid reading the directions until later.  Be certain that you understand exactly what needs to be done for the project. If you are unsure, this is the time to ask the teacher to explain it in more detail.

Plan for Success:

Planning is very important to the success of your project.  Look at the project as a whole and begin to break up the project into smaller tasks. Once you have created the smaller tasks, assign a due date for each of these tasks. This planning and chunking down of the project will make it more manageable for you and allow you time to really focus on each part of the project with ample time and effort.

Organize Your Materials:

Organize all of your materials in one spot or folder. Organization will reduce stress and minimize the risk of losing any of the information or materials. This will reduce any wasted time and allow you to get right to the task at hand. Organization is important when working on a long project.

Ask For Help:

Don’t hesitate to ask for help along the way.  It’s ok to ask for help if needed. Seek the support you need either from your parent, teacher or peer. Bigger projects take time, patience and lots of focus.

Mastering these skills take time and patience.  However, with continued practice, bigger projects will not be as overwhelming and stressful. Implementing these 5 tips will help you stay organized, improve your time management skills and give you the tools you need to be successful.
