Back To School Tips

Jul 29, 2013 by Yolanda Fontanez-Coleman | Back To School, Parent Blogs

Back to school is the beginning of a new year. It brings along new friends, new teachers and new experiences. Along with these new things comes along many emotions for both parents and kids. As a parent, I find myself excited about my girls’ new experiences. Rekindling old friendships and making new ones. Getting to know their new teacher and learning about their new class.  I also find myself feeling bittersweet about the new year. Excited that they are growing into a new part of their lives but also sadden by the realization that my three young girls are growing way too fast.

Children experience a wide range of emotions as well.  They may feel excitement and anxiety for the upcoming year. How can parents minimize any of that worry and help their child ease into a new school year?

1.  Talk, Talk, Talk.

Have a heart to heart with your child. Ask them about what they are feeling about the upcoming school year. You may be surprised with what you learn. Be sure to really listen to their feelings. Reassure them that the new change into the school year will be okay and that what they are feeling is normal.

2. Give them a Tour

This tip is especially important for kids in transition years (entering kindergarten, middle or high school) and for students transferring to a new school. Arrange a time with the school so they can give you and your child a tour of the new school. Knowing the surroundings of the school will ease any worry your child may be feeling.

3. Discuss Schedules

Establishing routines and schedules with children gives them a sense of security. Discuss the plans for transportation to and from school. Let them know who will be home who will be home when they arrive from school. Go over their in-school schedule as well. It will be fun for them to know when they will have art class and/or gym.

Transitioning into a new school year can be difficult for some students. Keep the lines of communication open with your children. Share in the excitement of their new school year journey and ease their worry by communicating with them.
