Study Skills Resources

Oct 26, 2021 by Mary Kate | Study Skills

Study organizational skills are as important as learning math and reading skills in school. Students need to be able to prioritize, plan and organize their work in order to be successful in and out of the classroom.

Our tutors integrate study organizational strategies or SOS into subject tutoring during every session. Now a month into the school year, our tutors can evaluate to see where students may need a little extra help with organization. Team Tutor has pulled together some strategies and resources that may have the study organizational skills your student needs to get them back on track!

  • Dump the Backpack– Besides finding candy wrappers, your child’s backpack can give important information about assignments & schoolwork. Coming home from school or after dinner, everything comes out of the bag. Not only does this prevent rotten food growing in the bottom of the bag, this can help generate conversation about the school day and jog your student’s  memory for important information.

  • Notification Check– For our older students, they may rely on notifications from Google Classroom or another school management system for assignments. Driving to sports practice or on the way home in the car, have your student click through each subject to review what they have worked on throughout the day. This may end with translating the information to a planner or calendar. Practicing this strategy helps students’ visualize what is digitally communicated.

Memory Aids

Recalling information can be daunting for students. The strategy of memory aids is as simple as phrases like “friend to the end” to remember how to spell the word friend with and i before e. There are so many memory aids that can help in multiple subjects. Students can even make up ones on their own! Schoolrun.com gives some amazing ideas.

Planners Don’t Work for Everyone

School counselor and podcaster, Mari Pasch, uses humor to explain ways to keep students organized in a system that works for them. She explains that there can be three primary means to organize assignments: a traditional planner, wall calendar, or digital app. Mari Pasch continues to compare and give the pros and cons of each.

Our tutors model and implement organizational skills throughout tutoring lessons and help support students so they can learn and master these skills. Remember not all students will take to specific skills, it is trial and error. Student’s learning styles vary and they will adapt to varying organizational skills. Together we can help strengthen your child’s organizational skills so they can thrive in and out of the classroom.
