Is your child struggling in school? There are many reasons why students struggle in school, however, one reason could be due to poor time management skills. We often see a deficit in time management skills for students in middle and high school. Time management skills need to be taught and practiced over and over again. Not all time management strategies will work for your child, however,  you should try them for at least 2 weeks before throwing in the towel. We have compiled a list of time management tips that will help your middle and high school student be successful in school and life.

Evaluate Your Current Schedule: Take a close look at your current schedule and prioritize what is most important. Are you spending time in activities that are deterring you away from your studies? Eliminate activities that are distracting you from your school work. This may be difficult to do, so have a discussion with your child and figure out what you can eliminate from their schedule.

Write a “To Do” List: Take a few minutes each day to stop and write down a “to do” list for the next day. This will help you manage your time and help you prioritize your responsibilities and tasks in advance

Use a Planner: Use a daily calendar or planner to schedule weekly activities. Make sure you post this planner in an area in your room or home that is visible to you. This daily reminder will help if you tend to forget things!

Set Up A Study Schedule: Create a consistent study schedule. For example, plan to study every day at 7pm. Put this on your calendar or planner. Make sure to STOP studying when you are no longer focused. A consistent study schedule builds effective study habits and helps your overall time management skills.

Use Timers: Set a timer when you are beginning homework or studying. The use of a timer will help you stay focused and on task. Implementing the use of timers is a great way to help with overall time management skills and will increase your productivity!

Implementing effective time management strategies will have a positive impact on your child’s overall school success. Not all strategies will be a good fit for your child, try them all and use the strategy that is most effective for your child. Remember it takes time and practice, so be patient.
